July 14th, 2010

The aim of keyword research is to find keywords that potential visitors to your website will use in a search query. If you can find the phrases that real people will use to find your website you will have taken a big step towards generating hits. Choosing the wrong keywords will waste a lot of time and money with no return on investment.

Finding the best keywords for your website is a challenge and it is important to spend quality time when researching keywords. Google’s Keyword Tool can provide you with keyword suggestions, monthly searches and number of competitors for each keyword. But first you need to start with a list of possible keywords to research.

How to find the Best keywords:

• Read through your website and make a list of all the words and phrases that could be used to describe your service or product.
• Use Google’s Keyword Tool or similar software to find suggested keywords based on your list of words.
• Enter each word or phrase into the search query of your favourite search engine and have a look at the top ten results.
• If the top ten results are for websites providing similar services or products than your website the keyword is relevant.
• Remove any words that are not relevant.
• Research your top 10 competitors and have a look at their websites and source code.
• Add any new words or phrases that they might be using to your list.
• Write a description of your website, service or product.
• Send the description that you have written to your friends and contacts and ask them to write down the phrases that they would use to search for this product, service or website.
• Include any new words or phrases provided by your friends and contacts to your list.
• Use Google’s Keyword Tool or similar software to determine the average number of searches and number of competitors for each keyword.
• The best keywords have a high number of searches with a low number of competitors.
• Draw-up a list of your top 50 keywords based on the number of searches and competition for each word or phrase.
• Send this list to your friends and contacts and ask them to choose the top 10 words or phrases that they would use to search for your website or product on the search engines.
• Draw-up a list of your top 10 keywords and phrases based on the feedback received.

Now that you have a list of the best 10 words or phrases that describes your website or product you can start to optimize these keywords. Use these words on your web pages, in your page titles, in your meta description, in your meta tags, in sub headings and throughout the content of your website. It is also very important to use these keywords in the anchor text of links to your website, in your domain name and in your user name when commenting on blogs or forums. Effective keyword optimization will result in high search engine rankings for your chosen keywords and this will result in organic traffic to your site.

Internet Marketing And Keyword Research

April 3rd, 2010

One of the most important aspects of internet marketing is understanding SEO and more specifically Keywords and keyword competition. This topic has many disputing across the web on which way is best to increase traffic and revenue. There are many that say going after highly competitive keywords is ill conceived and should not under any circumstance be attempted. There are others who ask why waste your time going after keywords that only have a few hundred searches monthly. Personally I enjoy mixing it up having both short term presences targeted towards low competition keywords as well as long term big websites that are targeted towards highly competitive keywords. The way you want to market your website will depend on both your abilities and the time you are willing to spend. If you have a long term goal of becoming a full time webmaster then putting together large websites that will target high competitive keywords will probably be the best way to accomplish your goals.

If you would like to make money online, but have limited time and you are not able to spend every waking minute marketing and adjusting your website then going after a less dominated website would be the best idea. Remember when you work on being at the top of Google it means little if you have hardly any traffic searching for the term you are ranking well for. The best way to find out how much traffic a term is going get monthly I use google adwords keyword analyzer which you can find by doing a google search. Put the long tailed keyword in the adwords keyword tool and then search for the exact match type after the search the tool will display the exact amount of times the long tailed keyword was searched for in the previous month. If the results are none the tool will read “results unavailable”, but if the search term makes sense it will display a number and if the number is below 1,000 monthly searches the term will usually be easily dominated.

If you decide to take on a larger project one that has from 50 thousand to 1 million monthly searches you will need to remember that the competition for such search volume is extremely stiff. Take time to do many google searches and find the main competition for the tough keywords you are trying to rank well for. Time and work ethic will determine your ability to rank well for highly competitive terms. You will need to wait at the very least a year before you will see good results for any term over 100k searches monthly. If you go after 1 or more million searches monthly then the time frame will more than likely be 2+ years before you reach the first page of Google. You will also need to try and work every day creating content and building links to your website the more your work the quicker you will rank for the term.
